Douglas Fir Block DF36
0.6" x 5.5" x 8.7"
0.5 lbs.

This is a board of Douglas Fir from the San Juan Islands of Washington. It's S2S, surfaced on two sides. We've cut these intending them as craft boards for things such as painting projects, laser work, pyrography, or other small projects. They are unique pieces of wood from a very specific locale.

The growth rings are exceptionally closely-spaced in these boards. This is due to the San Juan Islands being in the rain shadow of the Olympic Peninsula. Total annual rainfall in the San Juans is approximately 25 inches, as compared to the 100-150 inches of rain that falls in the Olympic Mountains to our southwest (and the >200" that falls on the Hoh Rainforest there). The trees here in the San Juans are "slow growth" with tight growth ring spacing due to the scant rainfall.

The color of this Douglas Fir is a warm warm reddish-brown with a hint of orange. The growth rings are finely-spaced at 10-15 years of growth present in each radial inch of lumber. Compare this to the ~4 rings per inch in Douglas Fir at the big box lumber stores.

This block has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. We cut these in batches, so what you receive may not be the same as shown in photos but will be similar in character.
