Fir

Fir is a versatile wood for crafting furniture and small woodworking projects. It is a softwood with a warm reddish-brown hue. Fir is relatively easy to shape, cut, and join.

All of the Fir on our site is sourced from the San Juan Islands, which are a chain of islands sheltered in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains of NW Washington state. The scant rainfall and temperate climate allows the trees to grow slowly and evenly, yielding unusually-close spacing of growth rings and a resulting fine-texture to the lumber. This slow growth Fir is a great wood for general woodworking and even for turning, as shown by the beautiful work of Washington woodturner Bill Luce
