This is a small block of Texas Ebony that is approximately 75% the rich chocolate brown of Texas Ebony heartwood and 25% the cream color of sapwood. 

It has several cracks in the sapwood that partially extend into heartwood; see close-ups for detail.  This crack is thin and tight - I would control it with CA glue.   The price is discounted because of the presence of these cracks.
