Texas Ebony Block TE-749 1.9" x 1.9" x 9.7" 1.5 lbs. This long, attractive Texas Ebony spindle is a mix of heartwood and sapwood. The heartwood has pretty variations in color, mostly deep dark-chocolate color with some lighter swirls in it near the sapwood interface. The sapwood is 10-20% of the block, and some of it may be preserved in the finished turning, if you choose. This block has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. It's been heat-treated to ensure there are no critters left inside. The block has a few open cracks that you might want to stabilize prior to turning. Black CA glue is especially attractive with Texas Ebony. There's also an interesting looking bark inclusion near a knot at mid-block. And a minor frass-filled bughole along one edge. I've taken lots of photos of this piece; please scroll down below the first 3 to see all of them. |
