Texas Ebony Block TE-560
1.75" x 1.75" x 8"
This is a beautiful piece of Texas Ebony heartwood. We've cut it into spindles of 1 3/4" across and 8" long. The grain on this piece is long and straight, with swirls around small and infrequent burl buds.
We have air-dried this Texas Ebony log for 5+ years. Moisture content is 10-12%. Janka hardness is 2820 lbf. Density is 80 lb/ft3. This wood is very dense and hard, one of the hardest available in North America. The finished products are exquisite.
This block has some very minor end-grain checking (see close-up photo). The front face of the block has an open knot that is filled with bark. It is an inch long on the surface and has a depth of at least 2 inches. This comprimises this block for turning as a long piece; you could turn the first 3" of the block from either end. This would let you turn several small objects such as bottle stoppers, spinning tops, or Christmas ornaments. We've discounted this block because of the open knot issue.
