Spalted Pecan Block P-880
3" x 3" x 13-3/4"
2-3/4 lbs.

This is a nice end-grain block of partially spalted Texas native Pecan. It is basically a soft tan to pinkish-tinted light brown color with several patches of darker, reddish brown and black pencil-line spalting along one edge.

There is one single very thin (and likely shallow) crack or drying check along one edge of the annotated face (top photo, but not really visible on that photo). There is also a single, small knot or imbedded limb on one edge (top photo, upper end of the right side). It is sound and will likely turn off as the block is roughed to round. Otherwise, I see no significant flaws. However, if you buy this block with the intention of use on a lathe, be aware that the zone of pencil-line spalting is confined to an edge, and most if not all will turn off if it is turned from square to full-round shape.

Please note that I describe this block as "spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength. The wood of this block is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be, and turning this block to achieve a good finish without tear out will require sharp tools and a light touch.
