Spalted Pecan Block P-869
2-1/8" x 2-1/4" x 16-1/4"
2-1/4 lbs.

This is another very nice and long end-grain block of heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. Approximately one-thirds of it is a soft tan that grades to light brown color, the other two-thirds is a darker shade of brown and a pinkish-tinted brown. Most of the dark brown to black pencil-line spalting lies within and along the margin of the tan-colored area. There is also a fairly unique band of parallel black spalt lines close to one edge of the annotated face (left side, top photo). These are not visible on the adjacent side and are likely to be quite shallow.

I see no significant cracks, but there are several very thin drying checks present that are too thin to see on the photos. I would reinforce these with thin CA glue before turning. There are also three sizeable pockets of included bark on the annotated face (top and bottom photos), two of which exhibit short, but open gaps. These types of features generally do not pose a problem for me when turning - I simply reinforce the bark portions with thin CA glue and either leave the open gaps as character features, or if necessary, fill with something appropriate (I like black-died epoxy). Note - after taking those photos, I went ahead and applied thin CA glue to reinforce any loose bark in those gaps.

Please note that I describe this block as "heavily spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength. The wood of this block is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be, and turning this block to achieve a good finish without tear out will require sharp tools and a light touch.
