Spalted Pecan Block P-867
3-3/8" x 3-3/8" x 8-3/8"
1-1/4 lbs.

This is a nice end-grain block of moderately spalted Texas native Pecan. It is basically a soft tan to pinkish-tinted light brown color with prominent, dark-brown to black pencil-line spalting and some small patches of darker, reddish-brown spalt coloration. The grain is a pleasant and gracefully flowing pattern with a degree of chatoyance.

I see no cracks, checks or other significant flaws. However, there is a single small pocket of what appears to be imbedded bark with a small, irregular hole in the center. It is visible on the upper left-hand side of the annotated face (top photo). Located very close to one edge, it will likely turn off completely when roughed to round.

Please note that I describe this block as "spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength. The wood of this block is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be, and turning this block to achieve a good finish without tear out will require sharp tools and a light touch.
