This is a beautiful end-grain block of Texas Live Oak (Quercus fusiformis), a variety of Red Oak.  It is all heartwood.  Grain is attractive, with nice rays on the quarter-sawn sides. 


This is a nice, solid block and very dense.  There are a few areas of open grain, as red oak tends to have.  And there are a few drying checks on one end.  See photo for close-up.  You might want to CA-stabilize these prior to turning.
