Pecan Block P-447
2.8" x 2.8" x 7.2"
This is a beautiful end-grain block of lightly spalted Texas native Pecan wood. It is basically a soft tan to pinkish-tinted light brown color with subtle darker-brown streaks of spalt coloration. There are a few lines of black pencil-line spalting. The wood grain has a pleasant and gracefully flowing pattern with a degree of chatoyance.
This block has been air-dried to 8-10% moisture content. Density of this piece is 46 lb/ft3, which basically the density of unspalted Pecan (47 lb/ft3). There is one open crack through a knot, plus several very thin drying checks present that may be too thin to see on the photos. I would reinforce these with thin/medium CA glue before turning. There are several small open bugholes of 1/8" diameter.
This block is discounted because of the open crack. You have plenty of useable material from it both above and below the crack, if you choose not to glue it up.
