Mesquite Bowl Blank M-1076
3" x 5" x 6"
This is an attractive Mesquite bowl blank with a partial natural edge. It as a natural face along one edge and two faces, with sapwood and sub-bark exposed. There is some bark preserved within a pretty swirl, which I've tried to show in the photographs. This blank is suitable for a traditional bowl, a partially natural-edge bowl, or you could flip it on its side and go for smaller turnings that would allow you to highlight the natural edge. Lots of options with this one!
The colors include the rich reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood, the beige tones of Mesquite sapwood, and the dark brown of Mesquite bark. There are multiple grain-crossing rays with moderate chatoyance. There is wane associated with the tree trunk interface, so the finished bowl will be up to 3" tall in most of the bowl but somewhat less where the sapwood and bark are present.
There are some cracks present that we have stabilized with clear CA glue. I can see some open cracks that you may wish to treat with a bit more CA glue prior while turning. Overall, the wood is hard, dense, and ready to turn.
I take lots of photos, so please scroll down below the first 3 to see all of them.
