Mesquite Bowl Blank M-1028
3" x 7" x 7"
This is a beautiful half-log bowl blank cut from a crotch of Texas Honey Mesquite. The colors are the deep reddish brown of mesquite heartwood with bright yellow sapwood and dark brown bark. The bark on the backside is full and tight and you might anticipate using it for a barky, natural-edge bowl. The low side thickness on this blank is about 3", and the high side thickness is about 5".
There are several small, grain-parallel "ring-type" cracks visible on the end-grain faces (3rd and 4th photos). These types of cracks are stress-flaws, resulting from storm-related forces. In my experience, they are quite stable. I recommend that they be filled with something attractive (such as colorful epoxy) before or during turning. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.
