Mesquite Block M-913
4"x 4"x 9"
4-3/4 lbs.

This is a large end-grain block of moderately burly Texas Honey Mesquite. The colors are the classic reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with a large portion of yellow sapwood and dark brown bark on one edge and a portion of two sides (top photo). At full diameter, most of that bark and sapwood will turn off as the block is roughed to round, likely leaving a vertical stripe of sapwood. Two individual burl buds are present on opposite sides (top and bottom photos).

A prominent round feature on one side (top and bottom photos) is an imbedded old, bark-lined branch. A nearby, oval feature on the same side is an old, frass-filled borer hole, with a small, irregular pocket of imbedded bark in between. These appear quite tight but I would reinforce them with thin CA glue before turning.

The block was cut from close to the pith of the log and several dark-stained pith-related cracks are present on one edge. It looks as if all of those cracks will turn off as the block is roughed to round. There are also two old, very tight ring-type cracks (parallel to the grain) on two sides. Reinforced with thin CA glue, these should pose no problem for turning.

I see no other significant cracks, checks or flaws.
