Mesquite Block M-905
2-1/2"x 2-1/2"x 7"
1-1/2 lbs.

This is a very nice, moderately burly end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. It also includes at least two large clusters of burly buds that extend completely thru the block, all wrapped-up in a moderately undulating to complex, tight grain pattern.

The color is also mainly the rich reddish brown typical of Texas Honey Mesquite heartwood. There is a thin layer of yellow sapwood on one edge and the adjacent sides (both photos), but that will turn off immediately as the block is rounded. There is also a strong, dark brown, area of spalt staining on one corner and adjacent sides (top photo, near end, lower left corner) that appears to be associated with a nearby elongated gappy pocket of imbedded bark. Most of that darker area will also turn off as the block is roughed to round, but some lighter-colored portions will likely remain.

The only significant "flaw" I see is that gappy pocket of imbedded, dark brown/black bark. Probing with a thin wire indicates that a portion of the open gap is at least 1/2" deep before turning. If I were to be turning this, I would reinforce that bark with a light application of thin CA glue and then after roughing to close to the finished shape, I would fill any remaining gap with an attractive inlay (colored epoxy or the like). I see no cracks, checks or other significant flaws.
