Mesquite Block M-864
2-1/8"x 2-1/4"x 13"
2 lbs.

This is an interesting end-grain block of figured, lightly burled Texas Honey Mesquite. It is primarily the classic reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood, but includes a fairly large wedge of creamy yellow sapwood on one side and an adjacent edge. In addition, there are two elongated and irregular patches of dark brown bark (additional details below). The grain pattern is complex and tightly swirling over much of the blank and especially around a prominent cluster of burl buds that extend thru the central portion. There are also a number of prominent, grain-crossing rays with strong chatoyance visible on three sides.

I see two flaws that have to be addressed before turning. The first are the two patches of imbedded bark mentioned above. These are located on opposite sides (the larger pocket featured on the 2nd and 3rd photos, the smaller patch visible on the far end of the 1st photo) and may be connected in the center. A lot of that bark and the surrounding sapwood will turn off as the block is roughed to round, but the remaining bark would likely constitute attractive and interesting features in the finished turning. I recommend using CA glue to reinforce that bark so portions do not "blow out" as the block is turned. The second flaw is what appears to be a thin, very tight, darker-brown stained crack in the central portion of one side and one adjacent edge (1st photo). That spalt-stained crack appears to be very shallow and will likely turn off as well when the blank is rounded. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.
