|Bodark Block B-634
2" x 3-1/2" x 5-3/4"
This is another nice, smaller rectangular block of Bodark that, among other uses, would be suitable as the head for a small mallet. The wood is the strong golden-brown of fresh-cut, but mature Bodark heartwood. It also includes several prominent and attractive stripes of red spalting (both photos). The nature of that spalting is not clear, but the wood is quite sound and should do well as a smaller mallet.
I see no cracks, checks or other flaws.
Note, if you are looking to build your own mallet, numerous Bodark blanks that are suitable for the making of strong mallet handles, are available in the section titled "End-grain turning blocks between 1 and 2 inches-square".
