Aromatic Cedar Block ERC-309 1.7" x 1.7" x 16" 0.8 lbs. This is a nice, long end-grain block of Eastern Red Cedar. It is entirely the deep reddish-purple of Texas Cedar heartwood. The grain pattern is strong and linear to gently swirling. In places, you can see intermixing of heart and sapwood that is characteristic of ERC. This piece is very aromatic -- it smells wonderful! There is a bit of wane along one edge, at the sapwood interface. There are scattered wood borer holes in the heartwood; the sapwood is fairly well-eaten. There are some small drying cracks at the annotated end, see close-up. These likely need to be stabilized for turning. |
