This is a beautiful end-grain block of Texas-grown Honey Mesquite. The color is the rich, reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with some creamy beige sapwood and dark-chocolate bark. 

This block has been fully air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. 

There are several open voids in the block that appear to be during-growth openings, rather than drying cracks.  You may wish to use epoxy or CA glue to fill these prior to turning.  This is an awesome block, probably best for very sharp tools and an experienced hand.
