This is an end-grain block of Eastern Red Cedar.  It is mostly the deep reddish-purple of Texas Cedar heartwood with a thin lens of sapwood along one edge.  The grain pattern is strong and linear to gently swirling.  In places, you can see intermixing of heart and sapwood that is characteristic of ERC. 

This piece is very aromatic -- it smells wonderful!  There are a few scattered wood borer holes in the heartwood, and the sapwood is heavily bored.   The block is sealed with Anchor Seal and has been air-dried to ~12% moisture content.  I see no significant cracks, checks, or flaws.    There aren't any knots visible -- this is an unusually knot-free piece of cedar.
