Spalted Pecan Block P-872
2-1/4" x 2-1/4" x 11-7/8"
1-1/2 lbs.

This is a very nice end-grain block of colorful, heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. Most of it is a soft tan to light, reddish- to pinkish-brown color, but with intra-grain bands of golden-yellow colors and a wide, elongated golden-yellow (when wet, top photo) along one side of the annotated face and part of the adjacent side. That large golden-yellow area is bounded by thick lines of reddish spalting and thinner lines of black pencil-line spalting. In addition, an eye-catching pattern of numerous, closely-spaced and parallel black spalt lines are present along a portion of the adjacent side (left side, top photo and a portion of the bottom photo).

I see no cracks, checks or other significant flaws in this block. There is a long area of wane on the right edge of the annotated face (top and middle photos), but it is shallow and will turn off as the block is turned to round. Also, there is a small pocket of what appears to be imbedded bark on one edge (bottom photo). A small open hole is present within that feature, but thin-wire probing shows it to be quite shallow. All of that feature will likely turn off as the block is roughed to round.

Please note that I describe this block as "heavily spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength. The wood of this block is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be, and turning this block to achieve a good finish without tear out will require sharp tools and a light touch.
