Spalted Pecan Block P-868
2-1/8" x 2-1/8" x 17-1/4"
2 lbs.

This is another nice, long end-grain block of heavily spalted Texas native Pecan. There appears to be three spalt-related colors in this block, with one prominent area that is a soft tan that grades to light brown color and a large area of a pinkish-tinted brown that grades to a darker, reddish-brown. The boundary between those varied color areas are generally marked by strong, black and dark-reddish pencil-line spalting.

I see no significant cracks, but there are several very thin drying checks present that are too thin to see on the photos. I would reinforce these with thin CA glue before turning. There are also two (and possibly a third) small pockets of what appear to be imbedded bark. The two larger (but still small) ones are visible on the left side of both the top and bottom photos. I do not consider them to be significant and would also simply reinforce them with thin CA glue. And lastly, there is a small, elongated area of somewhat-fractured and decayed(?) wood at the end of one edge (top end of the block on the 2nd photo). That is quite shallow and should turn off completely as the block is turned to round.

Please note that I describe this block as "heavily spalted". To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up some density and strength. The wood of this block is not punky, but it is not the same hard wood that non-spalted Pecan can be, and turning this block to achieve a good finish without tear out will require sharp tools and a light touch.
