Pecan Block P-446
2.8" x 2.8" x 12"
2 lbs.

This is an end-grain block of moderately spalted Texas native Pecan wood.   It is basically a soft tan to pinkish-tinted light brown color with subtle darker-brown streaks of spalt coloration.  There are a many lines of black pencil-line spalting.  The wood grain has a pleasant and gracefully flowing pattern.  There is one patch of wane in the top corner, left of the annotation.

This block has been air-dried to 8-10% moisture content.  Density of this piece is 37 lb/ft3, quite a bit less than the density of unspalted Pecan, 47 lbs/ft3.   To achieve this beautiful degree of spalting, the wood does give up a some density and strength.  Turning this block to achieve a good finish without tearout will require sharp tools and a light touch.

This block is discounted because of an open crack system that you can see running along the front face, below the annotation.  I cannot tell how deep the crack is, but it should be fillable by thin CA glue.  Black would be beautiful.   There are several small open and/or frass-filled bugholes of 1/8" to 1/4" diameter.

I'm taking plenty of photos of this piece, so please scroll down below the first 3 photos to see more.  This piece will be a beautiful turning!  It'll just take some TLC.
