This slim spindle of Texas Ebony has a mix of 60% heartwood, 40% sapwood.  Beautiful grain, slightly curving.

It's been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content.  There is one shallow crack mid-spindle at the heartwood-sapwood interface along the edge of the spindle.  See photo for close-up.  A little CA glue will secure it just fine.
