Eastern Red Cedar - Aromatic Cedar

Eastern Red Cedar or "aromatic" Cedar are one and the same and have the species name - Juniperus Virgiania. This cedar should not be confused with western red cedar which is a completely different species. Aromatic red cedar heartwood is generally a beautiful salmon pink which ages to reddish brown. Some of our Texas Eastern Red Cedar is also known as "Purple Heart Cedar" due to the dramatic purple color of the Heartwood. Unfortunately - both the lovely heartwood colors, the salmon pink and purple, eventually fade to reddish brown. The sapwood is a creamy white; it also changes color with time; the final color is generally a light tan.

Eastern Red Cedar is widely distributed throughout the eastern United States and is cut and milled for flooring, paneling, fencing, cedar chest or decking. Here in Texas, Cedar is primarily used for fenceposts, but we feel that is attractive enough to offer for your woodturning. You can see examples of various bowls and vessels turned from Cedar and other "exotic" Texas woods on my companion website, www.prairiesend.com.

As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-274
1-3/4" x 1-3/4" x 12-3/4"
3/4 lb.

This is a nice end-grain block of our Texas Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is almost all the deep reddish-purple heartwood, but includes a tiny strip of creamy sapwood on one edge. The grain pattern is smoothly linear to gently curving on the quarter-sawn faces and more complex on the plain-sawn faces.

There are two long, thin drying checks on one edge (visible on the top photo, just to the right of the sapwood stripe). One does extend ~3/4" into the block where it intersects the end-grain face. It is very tight and I would just reinforce them both with thin CA glue before turning. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-275
1-3/4" x 1-3/4" x 11-1/2"
3/4 lb.

This is another nice end-grain block of our Texas Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is entirely the deep reddish-purple heartwood. The grain pattern is generally linear to gently curving on the quarter-sawn faces and more complex on the plain-sawn faces. Two prominent and quite sound knots visible on opposite faces represent the saw-truncated ends of a small branch that is imbedded within this block. Those gently curling to complex grain patterns are associated with growth around that imbedded branch.

There is a long, thin drying check on one edge (visible on the bottom photo, just to the right of the left edge). It does extend ~1/2" into the block where it intersects the end-grain face but is likely much shallower toward the other end where it dies out. It is very tight and I would just reinforce it with thin CA glue before turning. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-276
1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 16"
3/4 lb.

This is an interesting end-grain block of our Texas Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is mainly the reddish-purple heartwood color, but includes two small wedges of creamy sapwood at opposite ends of one edge (top photo, near edge). There are also several small cream colored areas associated with bits of imbedded sapwood. The grain pattern is linear to gently curving on all four sides, with the curving patterns due to growth around two small imbedded branches. The ends of those imbedded branches are marked by four small but prominent (and quite sound) knots visible on opposite faces (both photos).

There is a single, long and thin drying check within the larger wedge of sapwood (barely visible in the larger sapwood area, left side, near end of the block). The depth of the check is not clear at the moment. I would reinforce it with thin CA glue before turning and be prepared to fill any remaining portion if it does not turn off completely. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

There are also several small cream colored areas associated with bits of imbedded sapwood. The grain pattern is linear to gently curving on all four sides, with the curving patterns generally due to growth around one large imbedded branch. It is almost all reddish-purple heartwood color, with a small wedge of creamy sapwood on the end of one edge (bottom photo, near edge) and several cream colored, intragrain stripes and areas associated with residual bits of imbedded sapwood. The grain pattern is linear to gently curving on two quarter-sawn sides, and beautifully complex on the plain-sawn sides.

There is a single, shallow drying check in that small patch of sapwood on one edge (bottom photo). That should turn off immediately when the blank is rough-turned to round. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws.

The overall grain pattern is smoothly linear to gently curving, with a bit more complexity toward one end (both photos).

There are absolutely no cracks or drying checks in this block. However, there are a number of small borer holes in the sapwood and one (visible in the end-grain end on the bottom photo) appears to be quite deep. Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-271
2" x 2" x 16-1/8"
1-1/4 lb.

This is an absolutely beautiful end-grain block of our Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is primarily the deep reddish-purple of our Texas Cedar heartwood with just a small wedge of sapwood on one corner, in a small imbedded twig, and softly imbedded below one large knot (top photo). The grain pattern is strong and varies from linear, to gently swirling, and becomes very complex with an amazing flame/feather figure around a large knot (top photo, middle of the block).

The only flaws that I see are a number of small, shallow borer holes in the wedge of sapwood (near end, top photo) and two very thin and tight drying checks on one edge to the left of that sapwood. There are two small and sound knots on opposite faces which likely represent the two ends of a small imbedded branch (both photos). There is a single thin drying check within the patch of sapwood that does extend into the adjacent heartwood (bottom photo). This is another beautiful end-grain block of Texas aromatic Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It extends and becomes thinner, following the linear grain pattern from that side edge back toward the edge of the end-grain face. It seems to be quite shallow and most will turn off as the block is rounded. I would reinforce that check with thin CA glue before turning. This is another very nice end-grain block of Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is composed of deep reddish-purple heartwood with thin slabs of creamy white sapwood on two edges. All of that sapwood will turn off as the block is roughed to round. It was also cut from an area of several small side limbs, marked by several small knots.

The main pith of the log lies just outside this blank but the piths of the small side limbs are present. I see no cracks related to those piths. There is a prominent line of included bark around a portion of lone knot at the upper end of the block (top photo, upper right corner). That bark and knot appear quite sound but I recommend reinforcing the area with thin CA glue. There are also two drying checks in the sapwood portion of this block. The larger check extends the length of the block along one edge and is as deep as ~1". Located on that edge however, most if not all of that drying check will turn off as the block is roughed to round. The other check is small and tight, and appears to be quite shallow. There are also several small open borer holes. These are confined to the sapwood portion and should also turn off as the block is rounded. I see no other flaws in this block.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC 281
3" x 3" x 6-1/4"
1-1/4 lbs.

This is a nice end-grain block of aromatic Purple Heart Texas Eastern Red Cedar. It is essentially all deep reddish-purple heartwood with occasional thin lenses of residual creamy yellow sapwood. Small side limbs are marked by one medium size and several very small knots, most of which are located on edges and will likely turn off as the blank is roughed to round. The grain pattern is generally linear throughout.

The main pith of the log lies within this blank, close to one side, but I see no pith-related cracks. There is the shallow, elongated remains of an old borer hole on one face (far end of left side, top photo), along with a tight and apparently shallow drying check close to one edge. That elongated depression and associated drying check will also turn off as the block is rounded. I see no other checks, cracks or significant flaws.

This is a beautiful end-grain block of aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar - the Purple Heart variety. It is essentially all deep reddish-purple heartwood with occasional thin lenses of creamy yellow residual sapwood. It was cut from within the crotch of a large side limb and a portion of that limb is visible crossing thru one end of the block (end-grain face, top photo and far end of left side, bottom photo). The overall grain pattern is complex to highly figured in approximately one-half of this block, and generally strongly linear elsewhere.

The main pith of the log lies outside this blank but the pith of that side limb described above is present. However, I see no pith-related cracks, or for that matter, any other cracks or checks. There is a single small borer hole on one edge that should turn off as the block is rounded.

This is another beautiful and very complex end-grain block of the Purple Heart variety of aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar. It is essentially all deep reddish-purple heartwood with occasional thin lenses of residual creamy yellow sapwood. It was cut from within the area of several large side limbs which resulted in a complex, highly-figured, crotch-related grain pattern thru most of the block. A portion of one limb is visible crossing thru the upper half of the block (top photo).

The main pith of the log lies outside this blank but the pith of that side limb described above is present. I see no cracks related to that pith, or for that matter, any other cracks or checks. However, several other interesting and possibly complicating features are present, as follows:
- a long, partially open vein of included bark is present at one end (end-grain face and end of the annotated face, top photo) - this the result of bark overgrowth within the crotch of a side limb.
- a second gappy lens of included bark visible on one side (the left side, top photo). This also appears to be an overgrown patch of bark within a crotch, and is likely to be an extension of the other nearby patch of included bark. So these bark patches may be connected within the block and have to be dealt with during turning.
- There is a small but deep open hole in the dead center of the side-limb pith on the left side of the top photo. This may be the result of some type of borer, and will likely be present in the finished turning.

I see no other significant flaws in this block.

This is a very nice square bowl blank of aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar. It is the Texas variety locally known as Purple Heart, with a deep reddish purple heartwood. There are two narrow stripes of cream to beige colored sapwood along two edges of the back side edge.

This block was cut from close to the pith of the log, and that pith was completely removed and I see no pith-related cracks. There are two very thin drying checks in those strips of sapwood on the edges, but those will likely turn off as the blank is trimmed or turned to round. That long, thin sapwood colored stripe on the back side may be the tail end of another drying check but the apparent association with sapwood is unclear. I see no other cracks or significant flaws in this block.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-279
6" x 6" x 3"
2-1/2 lbs.

This is another nice square bowl blank of aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar, the Texas variety locally known as Purple Heart. The heartwood is a deep reddish purple; the sapwood along two back edges is a nice cream to beige color.

This block was also cut from close to the pith of the log and that pith was completely removed, and I see no distinctive, pith-related cracks. However, there is one small and very shallow radial-type crack that lies just below (and roughly parallel to) the right side of the annotated face. It may be the remains of an old radial crack, but I consider it to be minor. It will turn off easily with less than 1/4" of loss to the thickness of the block. Please note, that long dark stripe on one end-grain face (left side, bottom photo) and a portion of both the annotated and back faces, does not appear to be a radial crack. However, it may represent staining associated with a crack that lay just beyond the limits of this block.

In addition, there are two shallow drying checks in the wider of the two sapwood edges on the back side, as well as a single long check in the heartwood. That long check in the heartwood is marked by the cream-colored stripe across the back (bottom photo). It does extend into the heartwood ~1/2" on one end-grain face (the small cream-colored stripe in the end-grain face, top photo) and about 1/8" on the opposite end-grain face. I would reinforce all of these small checks and that one crack with thin CA glue before turning. I see no other cracks, checks or significant flaws in this block.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-280

2-1/2 lbs.

This is another very nice square bowl blank of aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar. It is the Texas variety locally known as Purple Heart, with deep reddish purple heartwood and cream to beige colored sapwood.

This block was cut from close to the pith of the log and most of that pith was removed, leaving only a small portion at the lower end of the annotated face (top photo). I see no sign of any pith-related cracks. However, there are three very thin but distinct drying checks on the back side. Two are within the sapwood (faintly visible on the bottom photo) with one barely extending into the underlying heartwood and the other above the heartwood on one end, but extending into the heartwood ~1/2" at the end-grain face of the other end. If this face is mounted to be the bottom of the bowl, those two checks will likely turn off as the blank is trimmed or turned to round.

That long, thin, sapwood-colored (creamy) stripe on the back side does appear to be the tail end of an older drying check that extends ~1/2" and 5/8" into the heartwood on opposite end-grain faces. Note, the apparent, color-related association with sapwood is unclear. Most of that check will also turn off as the bowl is turned, but I would reinforce it with CA glue before turning. I see no other checks, cracks or significant flaws in this block.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-294
10" diameter x 5" thick
6-1/2 lbs.

This is a beautiful half-log bowl blank in aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar suitable for a bowl with ~10" diameter and 3" to 4" depth. Known in Texas as Purple Heart Cedar, the heartwood is a deep reddish purple with a creamy yellow to beige-colored sapwood on the back side. Cut from the center of a side-limb crotch, the grain pattern on the cut face includes a beautiful flame/feather figure. The crotch grain is enhanced by a number of wide intragrain bands of cream-colored sapwood. Were this on my lathe, it would be turned as a natural-edge bowl in an attempt to preserve and display that crotch grain and flame figure in the bottom and lower sides.

The pith was pretty-much removed from this blank, but a small portion does remain, visible on one side (left side, middle photo). I do see a single short and very thin crack in the center of the crotch figure (too thin to be visible on the photos) that may be a pith-related radial crack. This should be reinforced with thin CA glue before turning. In addition, there are a number of deep drying checks in the thick sapwood on the back side, most of which are confined to the sapwood layer. The few that do extend deeper to penetrate the underlying heartwood, that penetration depth is less than 1/4" where visible on the sides. Note, if a NE bowl form is planned, I recommend reinforcing those checks with CA glue before turning. I see no other significant flaws.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-295

This is another beautiful half-log bowl blank (the "half-brother" to ERC-294 above) in aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar suitable for a shallow bowl with ~10" diameter and 2" to 2-1/2" depth. Were this on my lathe, it would be turned as a shallow natural-edge bowl in an attempt to preserve and display that crotch grain and flame figure in the bottom and lower sides.

Some of the pith was removed from this blank, but a portion does remain, visible on the sides (left side, both middle and bottom photo). I do see one or two short and very thin cracks in the center of the flame/feather figure (dark lines right in the center) that may be the ends of pith-related radial cracks. These should be reinforced with thin CA glue before turning. In addition, there are a number of deep drying checks in the sapwood on the back side, most of which are confined to the sapwood layer. Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-296
10" x 11-1/2" x 4-1/2" thick
6-1/2 lbs.

This is another interesting and attractive, near whole-log bowl blank in aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar. It is suitable for a bowl with 7 to 8" diameter (depending on the desired depth) and as much as 4" deep. Known in Texas as Purple Heart Cedar, the heartwood is a deep reddish purple with a creamy yellow to beige-colored sapwood on the back side. I cut this blank well off-center of the log's pith in an attempt to preserve a likely complex crotch figure in the middle to lower portion of the finished bowl. The grain pattern revealed on the cut face is complex and attractive; I anticipate a nice crotch-related flame/feather figure at depth. Were this going to my lathe, it would be turned as a conventional bowl with most of the sapwood removed and a nice crotch figure on the inner sides and bottom. Note, a, oval hollow-form would also be a reasonable option.

The pith of the trunk and both limbs of the crotch remain in this blank. I do see no sign of any pith-related ring or radial cracks. There are a number of drying checks on the backside which penetrate the entire thickness of the sapwood layer but very little into the underlying heartwood. Note, one check in the sapwood at the center of the crotch (top photo) extends ~1/2" into the heartwood and the other 3 are close to or cross the scribed circle that marks the suggested limit for a 7" bowl. I would reinforce those checks with CA glue before turning, and then likely roll the upper rim of the bowl (recurve inward) to remove the sapwood as well as those checks. I see no other significant flaws.

This is a very nice, large half-log bowl blank in aromatic Eastern Red Cedar, suitable for a bowl of 12 to 13" diameter and 3 to 4" deep. This is a Texas variety of ERC locally known as Purple Heart Cedar due to the strong reddish-purple color of the heartwood. The sapwood around the perimeter, as well as numerous intragrain sapwood streaks, is a nicely contrasting cream to beige color. Cut from the area of a major side limb and the grain pattern includes some nice crotch-related figure referred to as a "flame" or "feather" figure.

The log from which this blank came was cut below the pith, so that all of the pith was removed. I see no pith-related cracks associated with the pith of the main trunk. However, the pith is present at depth within the large side limb visible on the annotated face (top photo), and a small pith-related radial crack from that limb is visible on the left side of the annotated face (intersecting the left side of the 12" circle). That crack will have to be addressed during turning. In addition, a prominent knot on one side (end-grain face of top photo), also includes a small and tight pith-related crack.

This blank was cut from an older log and several drying checks are present in the sapwood of the back side. Most appear to be confined to that sapwood with minimal penetration of the underlying heartwood. I see no significant structural weaknesses in this blank.

This is another very nice half-log bowl blank in aromatic Eastern Red Cedar, suitable for a bowl of 9 to 10" diameter and 4 to 5" deep. This is a Texas variety of ERC locally known as Purple Heart Cedar due to the strong reddish-purple color of the heartwood. The sapwood around the perimeter, as well as the occasional intragrain sapwood streaks, is a nicely contrasting cream to beige color.

Cut from the area of two large side limbs (one on the left side and one on the back side), the grain pattern visible on the cut face includes some very nice crotch-related grain patterns - referred to as a "flame" or "feather" figure. Additional complex grain patterns are likely at depth, related to the second side limb on the back.

The log from which this blank came was cut close to the pith, but most of the pith remains. I see no sign of ring or radial cracks related to the main log pith. However, the limb on the back side of this blank does have a prominent pith-related crack that includes both ring and radial components (not really visible on the bottom photo). That crack may extend deeper into the blank and require attention during turning. In addition, a prominent, crack-like gap is present within the limb on the left side of the blank (top photo). That crack-like gap appears to be a thin layer of imbedded bark, rather than a true stress crack. It is likely to be a now-decayed thin bark layer overgrown when the limb was much smaller. It is not a serious structural flaw but will need to be addressed during turning. Note, those two long straight lines across the annotated face are not cracks - they are saw-cut lines from my circular-blade sawmill.

This is a beautiful, large half-log bowl blank in aromatic Eastern Red Cedar, suitable for a bowl of 12 to 13" diameter and 3 to 4" deep, in a conventional bowl form, or deeper in a natural-edge bowl form. This is the Texas variety of ERC locally known as Purple Heart Cedar due to the strong reddish-purple color of the heartwood. The sapwood around the perimeter, as well as numerous intragrain sapwood streaks, is a nicely contrasting cream to beige color. Cut from the area of two large side limbs, the grain pattern includes some very nice and complex crotch-related figure.

The log from which this blank came was halved from just below the pith, such that all of the pith was removed from the main trunk and the limb on the left side (top photo). The pith is still present in the limb on the right side. I see no pith-related cracks associated with the pith of that right-side limb, but I do see long, but very thin pith-related cracks in the central area of the main trunk and limb on the left (so small that they are not really visible in the photos). Those radial cracks are very thin and appear to be minor flaws, but they should be addressed before turning. I suggest ample use of thin CA glue to reinforce them. In addition, that prominent dark red knot on the right side of the annotated face (top photo and middle photo), is partially surrounded by a thin band of included bark. I would also reinforce that area with thin CA glue.
Please note - that prominent dark line across the upper portion of the annotated face (top and middle photos) as well as several other, less distinctive, near-horizontal lines, are just the result of my sloppy chainsaw work when halving the log section.

This blank was cut from an older log and numerous shallow drying checks are present in the sapwood of the back side. Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-267

14 lbs.

This is another beautiful, large half-log bowl blank in aromatic Eastern Red Cedar, suitable for a bowl of 12 to 13" diameter and possibly 4" deep in a conventional bowl form, or deeper in a natural-edge bowl form. This is the Texas variety of ERC locally known as Purple Heart Cedar due to the strong reddish-purple color of the heartwood. The sapwood around the perimeter, as well as numerous intragrain sapwood streaks, is a nicely contrasting cream to beige color. Cut from the area of two large side limbs, the grain pattern on the annotated face is very complex and includes, among other features, two prominent flame/feather figures. Additional crotch-relate figure is likely to lie at depth in the blank.

The log from which this blank came was halved very close to the pith, such that the pith of the main trunk, as well as those of three side limbs, is present within the blank. Unfortunately I see several pith related cracks on the annotated face (associated with the main trunk and the large limb on the right side, top and middle photos). I also see two ring-type cracks around the pith on the upper end of the main trunk (on the end-grain face) and on the limb on the right side. These radial and ring cracks are not large or extensive (where visible) and I recommend using CA glue to reinforce and fill them before turning.
Please note - those numerous, near-horizontal lines on the annotated face are just the result of my sloppy chainsaw work when halving the log section - they are not cracks.

This blank was also cut from an older log and numerous shallow drying checks are present in the sapwood of the back side. In most cases, where they are visible at an end-grain face, they appear to be confined to the sapwood, and generally do not penetrate the underlying heartwood. However, there is one that does penetrate deeply into the heartwood toward the pith of the main trunk, and ties into one of the two ring cracks described above. Hopefully, that check does not extend too deeply into the potential bowl form. I see no other significant flaws in this blank.

This is a very nice, large rectangular bowl blank in aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar - the variety locally known as Purple Heart, with a gorgeous deep purple heartwood; the sapwood is a nicely contrasting cream to beige color. That dark bark is loose so a "barky" natural-edge bowl is unlikely in this case.

The pith in this log was off-center and that pith is present within this half and is visible on both end-grain faces (both photos). However, that pith appears to be quite tight and crack-free. There are several thin drying checks at one end, where the blank was cut from the end of the log. These checks appear quite shallow and I allowed extra length such that these should trim off when the blank is roughed to round. That is a 14" (max bowl diameter) circle scribed on the top face.

I see no significant cracks or other structural weakness in this piece.

This is another very nice, large rectangular bowl blank in aromatic, Purple Heart Texas Eastern Red Cedar - the half-brother to lot #155 above. The heartwood is a gorgeous deep purple heartwood and the sapwood is a nicely contrasting cream to beige color. That dark, stringy Cedar bark is also loose and absent in portions, so a "barky" natural-edge bowl is also unlikely in this case.

Two secondary limbs were present in this section of the living tree and should make for a very interesting grain pattern in the finished bowl. Those limbs are apparent from the grain pattern visible on the cut top face (the other half of that one on lot #155) and the stub of a second large limb on the backside (bottom photo). Note, that "stub" is a separate limb from the one that formed the swirling grain on the top face. There is even a third small limb on one corner (left edge of the end-grain face, bottom photo), but that will come off as the blank is roughed to round. Again, this blank could be mounted and turned for a natural-edge bowl to take advantage of both of those crotch-related grain patterns.

The pith in this log was off-center and a short portion of that pith is present at one end of this half. The pith is visible on the end-grain face of the bottom photo and as the dark round spot at the upper edge of the annotated face on the top photo. There is one small and thin, pith-related radial crack on the end-grain portion of pith but it does not carry thru to the top face. I don't see that minor feature as any constraint to turning.

Both ends are fresh-cut and I see no drying checks. There do not appear to be any significant structural weaknesses in this piece.

Aromatic Red Cedar lot 121
10-1/2" x 11" x 4"
9 lbs.

This is another very nice half-log bowl blank in aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar. The heartwood is a beautiful salmon to dark red; the sapwood is a nicely contrasting white to cream color. It includes a major side limb and results in a very nice flowing figure at the cut surface with complex grain patterns and colors. Typical of Cedar, there are a number of juvenile branches that appear to extend outward from the heartwood into the adjacent sapwood - these will make for interesting patterns in any turned form.

The log that yielded this half-log piece was cut thru the pith and the shallow portion of that pith is included at the cut surface. However, the pith is tight and the blank exhibits no visible structural weakness. I did not round this into a bowl blank shape but left it intact such that you can cut it into smaller turning blanks - for goblets, pepper mills, pens, bowls or the like - if desired. However, I did scribe a circle on the cut face so that you can see the extent of the largest (10") bowl form that is likely from this piece.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar lot 151
11" diameter x 5" deep
9-3/4 lbs.

This is another beautiful half-log bowl blank in aromatic Texas Eastern Red Cedar. This is the variety locally known as Purple Heart, with a gorgeous deep purple heartwood; the sapwood is a nicely contrasting cream to beige color. As is usual with Eastern Red Cedar, there are a number of juvenile branches that appear to extend outward from the heartwood into the adjacent sapwood - these will make for interesting patterns in the sides and bottom of a turned bowl.

The pith was cut completely out of this half-log blank and it exhibits no visible structural weakness. It was roughly-rounded and flattened on the back to reduce shipping weight, to reveal some of the internal figure, and to make it ready to mount on your lathe and begin turning.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar ERC-306
4" x 11-1/2" x 3"
2-3/4 lb.

This is a very nice and fairly large rectangular block of the Texas Purple Heart (Eastern Red) Cedar. The grain pattern is a very attractive linear to gently curving around a number of small to large knots. The colors are primarily a soft reddish-purple but do include attractive, darker-reddish purple of the numerous knots and several irregular stripes interlayered within the grain.

All but one of the knots are sound, but the larger knot visible on the annotated face does have a thin crack across its center (top photo, but barely visible in the photo). There is also a single thin and shallow crack (or drying check) along one edge of the block (right side of the block in the top photo, but also not visible). I would reinforce/fill those small cracks with CA glue before turning. I see no other flaws in this block.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar lot 253
8-1/2" x 3" x 2-1/2"
1-1/2 lbs.

This is a beautiful and very complex, rectangular end-grain block of the Texas Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is primarily deep reddish-purple heartwood but includes numerous irregular stripes and small lenses of residual creamy yellow sapwood within a complex, crotch-influenced grain pattern. Cut from an area of several large side limbs, that complex grain pattern includes a beautiful section of crotch "flame figure" with an eye-catching degree of chatoyance (bottom photo).

The main pith of the log seems to lie outside this blank, but a portion of the pith of one side limb (or two?) is present (top photo). However, I see no pith-related cracks or any other significant flaws in this block.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar lot 254
14-5/8" x 2-3/4" x 7/8"
3/4 lb.

This is a nice small quarter-sawn board of Texas Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is entirely deep reddish-purple heartwood with a smoothly linear to gently curving grain pattern.

I see no cracks, checks or other significant flaws. Please ignore the third dimension annotated on the top photo - it is really 7/8" thick, not the 14-5/8" that I mistakenly noted.

Aromatic Purple Heart Cedar lot 255
9-1/4" x 3" x 1"
1/2 lb.

This is a nice small quarter-sawn board of Texas Purple Heart Eastern Red Cedar. It is almost entirely deep reddish-purple heartwood but does include several very small patches of creamy-yellow residual sapwood on the back side (bottom photo). The grain pattern is generally smoothly linear to gently curving, but is a bit more complex in a portion of the back side, where a small branch/twig seems to have had some influence. There is even a small pocket of included bark in the center of what was probably a small crotch associated with that branch.

I see no cracks, checks or other significant flaws.
