Smaller Mesquite Turning Blocks

Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.

The weights were measured at the time that the blocks were photographed and sealed. Some drying will occur and the weights are likely to be less by the time that they are delivered. The descriptions accompanying the photos describe all obvious physical flaws or character features, the good and the bad, such as pith cracks, checks, flame figure, birdseye features, etc. I do a lot of turning and when describing these blanks, I look at them as if they were going on my lathe.

Mesquite Pen Blanks
1"x 1"x 5-1/2" and 6"

I occasionally cut nicely figured Mesquite into pen blanks. Those pictured here are typical although my photography leaves something to be desired. The colors are the strong reddish brown of Mesquite heartwood with traces of the bright yellow Mesquite sapwood on some of the blanks. The wood is hard and can be sanded and finished to a beautiful, sensually smooth surface.

Mesquite Lot 206

This is a near-perfect end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. This block is primarily the rich, reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with a very nice linear to gently swirling grain pattern. The colors in the three photos, classic rich reds of Texas Honey Mesquite, are approximately true. There is a small patch of old sapwood on one corner that will turn off immediately as the block is roughed to round. There also is a small patch of apparent darker brown spalting on one end (upper left side, top photo). Most, if not all, of this will also turn off.

I see no cracks, checks or obvious flaws.

Again, it is primarily the rich, reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with a very nice gently swirling to complex grain pattern. The colors in the three photos, classic rich reds of Texas Honey Mesquite, are approximately true. There is a large area of chatoyance on two adjacent faces (top photo).

Two thin cracks are present: a thin but open ring crack along the upper left edge of the labeled face and a fine, hairline radial crack in the top end and upper portion of the back. These cracks are so minor that they are not visible in the attached photos. That ring crack on the edge will likely turn off during rough-out. Mesquite Lot 202
5"x 5"x 18-1/4"
16-1/2 lbs.

This is a very nice but challenging end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall grain pattern is strong and linear to strongly swirling in areas. The color is the rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Mesquite, with a thin patch of thready, grey-brown Mesquite spalting on one side. Note, the color reproduction in my photos is unreliable. The colors in the top and bottom photos are very close, but those of the center photo are not true - the color here is also the strong reddish brown of Texas Honey Mesquite.

There are areas of cream-colored sapwood on one side and an area of wane (the absence of bark) on the lower end of that same side (top and bottom photos). Most of this will turn off as the block is rounded. There is also a large pocket of included bark and associated edge crack on the opposite side (top end of middle photo). The bark and crack are quite tight with thin open areas that can be reinforced, and filled when necessary, with CA glue or epoxy - and could be quite attractive.

This block was cut from well away from the pith, and I see no pith-related cracks or other structural flaws.

Mesquite Lot 203
5"x 5"x 17-1/4"
16 lbs.

This is another very nice but challenging end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall grain pattern is also strong and linear to strongly swirling in areas. The color is the rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Mesquite, but with a thin patch of thready, gray-brown Mesquite spalting associated with a pocket of dark brown bark. Note, the color reproduction in my photos is unreliable. The colors in the top and bottom photos are very close, but those of the center photo are not true - the color here is also the strong reddish brown of Texas Honey Mesquite.

There are two small areas of cream-colored sapwood and wane (the absence of bark) on edges (top and middle photos). These should turn off completely as the block is rounded. There is also a large pocket of included bark on one side (left side, top photo and close-up, bottom photo). The bark inclusion includes a large and deep hole that you would likely want to fill (inlace or colored epoxy?) before turning.

This block was also cut from well away from the pith, but the tail ends of several prominent radial cracks are present. These include a zone of short, overlapping, gappy cracks (lower, left side top photo and upper portion of the bottom photo). Two prominent, open and deep radial cracks are also present across one corner (lower right corner, bottom photo). There also is a thin, curving crack that extends around a portion of the large included bark area (bottom photo). Most of the large cracks will turn off but some will remain if the full, potential diameter is required. Epoxy fill may be appropriate for these features.

This is another very nice, large and near perfect end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite - the contains no really "challenging" features. The overall grain pattern is strong and linear and the color is rich reddish brown typical of our Texas Honey Mesquite. Again, the color reproduction in my photos is unreliable - that darker color of the middle photo is not true - that of the top and bottom photos are very close.

There is one small area of old bark on one corner (visible on the top and middle photos) but no distinctive sapwood (???). That bark will turn off completely as the block is rounded. This block was also cut from well away from the pith and there are no significant pith-related cracks. That long, linear dark line (most visible on the lower photo) is the spalt-stained, "extreme" tail end of a radial crack that was cut off from this block. Mesquite Lot 205
3"x 3"x 12"
4-1/2 lbs.

This is a nice end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. This block is primarily the rich, reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with a very nice linear to swirling grain pattern. The colors in the three photos are approximately true.

There are two prominent features to consider: 1) there is the shallow remaining portion of a long open borer hole on the edge of one face (middle photo) - this should turn off completely as the block is roughed to round. 2) there is a large gap on one other edge (middle and bottom photo) that appears to be the result of old decay. However, the wood adjacent to the gap is quite sound and not significantly spalted. This area will also turn off completely during rough-out.

There is one small and tight crack on one edge (to the left of the "gap" on the bottom photo). This appears quite shallow and should also turn off as the blank is rounded. I see no other cracks, checks or obvious flaws.

There is also an area of "pop-out" on the edge at that end - likely due to separation along an old crack. Most if not all of this pith and associated features will turn off as the block is rounded. There is also a bit of a flat edge on one corner - this too will turn off. And last - there is a small irregular area of included bark on one side (lower face on the bottom photo). This should be reinforced with CA glue before and, if necessary during, turning. It may make an interesting feature in the finished piece. I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Mesquite Lot 87
4"x 4"x 10"
6-1/4 lbs.

This is another nice end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is generally linear, but strong and very attractive. There is a thin area of sapwood and bark on the back side. Most of the bark will turn off as the block is rounded.

This block was cut from fairly close to the pith of the log and there are several prominent, pith-related cracks on one edge (lower side, top photo). The major portions of these cracks look as if they will turn off as the block is rounded, but one does extend well into the central portion on one end (that end visible in the bottom photo) and would have to be addressed during turning. It is pretty tight and I would just reinforce it with thin CA glue and fill any open portions with a medium CA (or epoxy). I would also (probably) use this end for the tenon and then "turn away". This is too pretty a piece of wood to reject just for that crack, so I have reduced the price somewhat.

I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Mesquite Lot 88
4"x 4"x 10"
5-3/4 lbs.

This is another nice end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is generally linear, but strong and very attractive. There is a thin area of sapwood and bark on the back side. Most of the bark will turn off as the block is rounded, but a portion of the bark may be deeper (1/2"?) and reduce the maximum finished diameter somewhat.

There is one thin, shallow and tight crack on one edge of one end (lower side, exposed end, bottom photo). Most of this crack will turn off as the block is rounded; any remaining should be reinforced with thin CA glue. There are also some very minor drying checks on one end (exposed end, top photo). They seem to have no visible depth where they intersect the end of the block - they are very shallow.

I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

This is another nice end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is generally linear, but strong and very attractive. There are several prominent, pith-related cracks on one half of the back side (bottom photo). One of these does extend well into the central portion on one side and the others may be of similar depth. These cracks probably make the piece unsuitable for turning, but there is a lot of very nice Mesquite wood here - possibly suitable for small work such as knife handles, segmented turning material, etc.

I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

Mesquite Lot 93

This is a nice end-grain block of Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is generally linear, but strong and very attractive. There is a large area of sapwood and bark on one end of the back side. Most of that sapwood and bark will turn off as the block is rounded.

There is one thin and tight crack on the upper edge of the front side (under the number "9", top photo). This small crack is shallow and tight - I would reinforce with thin CA glue and "turn away". There is also one large hole approximately 2" from the end in the barky area (bottom photo) that is as deep as ~1". This will have to be considered in the design of the turned form. I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

This is another nice end-grain block of kiln-dried Texas Honey Mesquite. The grain is generally linear, but strong and very attractive. It was cut from the outer portion of the log and there are stripes of sapwood on two edges. These will turn off as the block is rounded.

There are several small and thin, pith-related cracks on one side, one of which resulted in a large flat "pop-out" of wood on that face (left side, bottom photo). These features will reduce the maximum diameter of the turning in that area (to 3-1/2"?).

I see no other cracks or obvious flaws.

This is another interesting end-grain Mesquite block. The grain is linear but strong with several small burl buds.

There are several flaws in this piece, including two tight but fairly deep (>1"?) radial cracks across the back side (lower photo), an elongate barky gap or sap pocket on one side (not visible on the photos) and a single small, shallow remnant of a bug hole on the lower corner of the face (upper photo). I see no other obvious faults.

There are a number of open bug holes on one edge and the back (lower photo); these appear to be relatively shallow (less than 1/2 inch?). There is also a small, tight crack on the upper portion of the face (left end, upper photo). The price reflects these flaws. I see no other obvious faults.

Mesquite Lot 64
3"x 3"x 10-1/2"
3-1/2 lbs.

OK - this one does have some obvious flaws - that is why it is so cheap! The most obvious flaw is the large "pop-out" on one edge (lower photo) - a parting due to an old, now absent ring crack in that area. Centered within that pop-out is a small and thin radial crack that extends the length of the block - end to end. Viewed from the ends, the crack is tight (not open) and extends inward less than 1". The wood adjacent to that crack is darker brown at the pop-out surface but that stain does not appear to penetrate into the wood. I would reinforce the crack with CA glue and turn the piece - it should make an interesting feature in the finished piece. Another small and tight radial crack is present on the bottom portion of the back (lower photo). This is shallow and will turn off during rounding.

The only other flaw is a small, thin but open ring crack in the bottom end that extends approximately 3/4" into the block and 4" up along the face (upper photo). Much of this will turn off during rounding and again - what remains could be readily reinforced, and if necessary filled, with CA glue. I see no other obvious faults.

Mesquite Lot 215
6"x 6"x 3-3/4"
4 lbs.

This is a very nice square block of Texas Honey Mesquite with a light burly grain and a subtle hint of chatoyance. This piece was cut from the outer portion of the log and includes a thin patch of sapwood and area of bark along one edge. The basic color is the rich reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood, but with some yellow and dark brown related to the sapwood and bark. It would be suitable for either a conventional bowl or a nice flattened, oval hollow-form.

There is a single crack visible in this piece - a small, thin and tight crack on one edge (lower left edge, top photo). This will immediately turn away in almost any form likely on your lathe. There is also a small "included" branch on one side and a corresponding(?) barky gap on the adjacent face (bottom photo). Not sure how this will play out in the final turned piece, but if you do not like it as-is, it can be filled (epoxy, inlace, turquoise, etc). There are also several open and frass-filled beetle holes in the sapwood portion of the block (bottom photo). I do not know if they extend into the heartwood. Again, this is a "filling" design opportunity if desired.

I see no other cracks, checks or obvious flaws. Note, those are just chainsaw "scratches" on the annotated face (top photo).

There is a prominent, open bark-lined gap on one edge (bottom photo). Most if not all of that feature will turn off as the blank is rounded if that back side is planned as the bottom of a conventional bowl or the rounded bottom of a hollow-form. The basic color is the rich reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood, but with some yellow related to that sapwood. Again, I see this block as suitable for either a conventional bowl or a deeper, oval hollow-form.

There is a small portion of the pith and several minor, pith-related cracks in one corner (lower right corner, top photo). All of the pith and the associated cracks will turn off as the blank is rounded. There is also a single thin, shallow crack in the sapwood on the edge of the back side (within that "small "notch" in the lower edge, bottom photo), and a very thin and tight radial crack in that same end-grain face, but again too small to be visible in the photo!). The sapwood crack should turn off as the block is roughed to round, and as far as that tiny radial end-grain crack is concerned, again I would reinforce with thin CA glue and "turn without concern".

The basic color is the rich reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood and yellow-brown of the sapwood. I see this as suitable for a small, conventional bowl.

The pith was close to this block and several thin, tight radial cracks are present on one side (right portion of the exposed lower side, top photo). Mesquite Lot 188

This is a very nice square block of burly Texas Honey Mesquite. The log from which this piece was cut included a complex, thinly laminated burly grain with numerous ray flecks and a subtle hint of chatoyance. The basic color is the rich reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood with a thin strip of yellow sapwood on one edge (upper photo). There is also a strip of bark on that sapwood edge. If you chose to make that annotated face the bottom of a bowl, the sapwood and bark will turn off.

Three small tight cracks are present on opposite edges of the opposite face (lower photo). They are less than 1/2" deep and quite tight. I would simply reinforce with thin CA glue and turn away. I see no other cracks, checks or obvious flaws.

Note, I mistakenly wax-sealed the end-grain faces before photography so you will have to take my word for it - the grain is very nice. I did turn a bowl from the log that yielded this blank and it "turned-out" to be very nice. I will include an "example" photo in the near future.

Mesquite Lot 136

This is a very nice square block of Texas Honey Mesquite suitable for a 6" diameter bowl. The grain is generally linear, but strong and very attractive with numerous subtle ray flecks and a nice sense of chatoyance. The basic color is the rich reddish-brown of Mesquite heartwood.

A large area of "wane" is present on one back edge, with a thin layer of yellow sapwood and the loose remains of dark brown bark. This wane will likely control the orientation of the bowl, making that side the bottom since the barky wane will turn off as the bottom is roughed-out. There is also a large open borer hole on one side just below the annotated face (left side, top photo). This hole is deep and, unless the bowl diameter is seriously reduced, will have to be addressed during turning. I would rough the bowl out and then fill this hole with something attractive, such as my "liquid gold" (powdered copper in epoxy).

I see no cracks, checks or other obvious flaws.
