Slabs and Other Interesting Pieces
Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the slab. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that these slabs are rough cut with natural edges. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut faces. Also, the photos were typically taken soon after the initial milling and all were wet-down to reveal the grain below the rough-cut surface - those cut surfaces are now commonly dark due to outside drying and storage since milling; the beautiful grain and color of the now air-dried Mesquite is still present just below the dark surface.
The approximate weight (in pounds) were measured at the time that the slabs were cut photographed. Some drying will occur and the weights are likely to be less by the time that the slabs are delivered. The descriptions accompanying the photos describe all obvious physical flaws or character features, good and the bad, such as pith cracks, checks, flame figure, etc.
I have not milled any Mesquite slabs recently so generally what I have is listed below. If you do not see what you like - please check back later.
Also, I have decided to sell slabs only for local pick-up - shipping out of our area is not worth the trouble.
Thanks, Lloyd

Mesquite Slab 07-1
2"x 13"(overall width ~18") x 4-1/2'
~45 lbs.
This is a very nice, sound curved slab of Texas Honey Mesquite that is suitable for a small bench or coffee table. It has full bark on all edges but the lower cut end. The colors are the strong reddish brown of Mesquite heartwood and bright yellow of fresh sapwood.
There are no significant cracks or other features that I would consider to be flaws. Those three dark and eye-catching areas on the top edges (upper photo) are partially open knots from long-gone branches. They look interesting as is, but if you wished, they could be filled with black epoxy to smooth-over them and extend the appearance of the dark bark edges. The lower end (both photos) is a small crotch and final finishing should reveal a very nice grain pattern in this area.

Root Ball Slab 1
34"x26"x3"

This is a beautiful mesquite root crotch with a nice wavy grain. As you can see in the photos, it includes one prominent crack and sapwood/root bark on the margins. This one would make a beautiful table.

Mesquite Slab 04-2
60"x 7 to 10"x 1-1/2 to 2'
~35 lbs.
This is a curvaceous slab to test your sinuous imagination. It is a good example of the typical curvy nature of Mesquite logs and likely suitable for a very interesting coffee table. I trimmed most of the the sapwood and bark off so this piece is nearly all Texas Honey mesquite heartwood.
It does have a prominent crack at one end. I am not sure if this is a growth-type radial crack or the product of drying (unusual for Mesquite). It was cut in early 2004, and after more two years air drying, the moisture content is likely to be on the order of 11 to 12%. Between that low moisture content and the natural stability of Mesquite in general, further growth of that crack is unlikely. If I were making a table from this slab, the crack would be filled with coal-black epoxy.
