Mesquite Wood For Sale

Smaller Mesquite Turning Blocks

These smaller, generally rectangular blocks of Mesquite are suitable for spindle turning and for end-grain turning of hollow-forms, small boxes, goblets and the like. They are also commonly suitable for resawing into pen blanks. Most are entirely heartwood with only a small percentage of sapwood and little if any bark. Some are entire limbs which have been squared-up and trimmed of bark and most sapwood. These include a tight pith; occasional small cracks and open and frass-filled beetle holes are also likely in these blocks.

Larger Mesquite Bowl Blanks

These Mesquite bowl blanks are generally larger pieces and frequently untrimmed half-logs. The half-log blanks generally contain the central pith and most of the sapwood and bark. Some are tight and fault-free, but many contain shallow pith and/or minor ring checks around the pith. CA glue is usually used to reinforce such cracks before or during turning.

Mesquite Slabs and Other Interesting Pieces

As I cut the trees and saw the logs, I am always on the lookout for larger, intact slabs and pieces with interesting grain patterns. Some of these are available here. These larger pieces typically contain bark inclusions and major cracks associated with the wild and twisty growth of the Mesquite. Turners typically employ epoxy as a filler and reinforcement in these features. Used clear, black stained or with decorative fillers, this epoxy commonly enhances the beauty of the finished mesquite piece.
