Eastern Black Walnut
I have recently had the opportunity to harvest several big Black Walnut trees. These are large Eastern Black Walnut trees that grow here in eastern Texas, not the small, native Texas Black Walnut trees found in west Texas.
I have just begun to turn some of this wood, but none are yet finished. Please keep an eye on my companion site, www.prairiesend.com, I expect to have some there soon.
As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.
Note - the color control on my photography of these Walnut blanks is not always great. Generally, those photos with the purplish cast to the heartwood is correct. Where I describe them as light brown - the colors in those photos are generally true. The lighter-brown blocks come from a tree that exhibited less of that purple cast.
Lloyd
Please note - I do not have a commercial-sized kiln to fully kiln-dry all of this wood. Therefore, these blanks are generally green to partially air-dried unless otherwise noted.

Black Walnut 190
2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 14"
4 lbs.
This is a 2-1/2-inch square end-grain block of Black Walnut heartwood. It is a light brown to purplish brown. A large (1" to 1-1/2") knot passes thru the center of this block abd results in a graceful curving to circular pattern to the otherwise linear grain. The knot is sound but I do not know how well it will work when turned.
I see no cracks or other potential flaws.

Black Walnut 191
2-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 12"
3-1/4 lbs.
This is a very nice 2-1/2-inch square end-grain block of a light brown to purplish brown Black Walnut heartwood. There are two areas of darker brown spalting present on one side - one fairly large shaded area and one tight, linear zone (left side, bottom photo). That shaded are should turn off as the block is rounded; the linear area has crisp boundaries, and if it remains after roughing-out, should make an interesting feature on the side of the finished piece.
I see no cracks or other potential flaws.

This is a very nice 2-inch square end-grain block of Black Walnut heartwood. It is a light brown to purplish brown. There are also several small "birds eye" knots that appear to extend thru the block and will likely be present as interesting features in that finished piece.
Cut from the inner portion of the Walnut log, this piece includes the extreme, outer portions of two nearby pith-related radial cracks (with dark-brown spalted borders). Located along one edge (left side, top photo, but barely visible) these cracks are thin and apparently quite shallow - I expect them to turn off entirely as the block is roughed-out.
I see no other cracks or potential flaws.

Cut from the inner portion of the Walnut log, this piece also includes the extreme, outer portions of two nearby pith-related radial cracks (with dark-brown spalted borders). Located along one side and adjacent edge (bottom photo), these are thin and apparently quite shallow. Most, if not all of these two cracks will turn off as the block is roughed-out.

Black Walnut 120

This is a very nice square bowl blank of Black Walnut that would also make a very attractive hollow form. The heartwood area includes the pith of the log with a very small pith-hole and very tiny, pith-related radial crack. The pith hole crosses the edge of the annotated face (top photo) but is unlikely to turn off completely. You would probably have to deal with that small hole and small crack in the side of any vessel/design (inlace anyone??). I see no other cracks or potential flaws.

Black Walnut 123

This is an absolutely gorgeous, large square bowl blank of Texas-grown Eastern Black Walnut. It also comes from a major crotch and has a complex and beautiful grain pattern. Again - suitable for a beautiful bowl or hollow form. The colors are the bright white to cream of Walnut sapwood with a large area of purplish-brown Walnut heartwood. Black Walnut 125

Another beautiful large bowl blank from a large Black Walnut crotch. Again - suitable for a beautiful bowl or hollow form, the colors are the bright white to cream of Walnut sapwood with a large area of purplish-brown Walnut heartwood. In this case, there is a single large and prominent crotch-type "flame" figure on the upper (annotated) face that extends through the sapwood and into the heartwood (top photo). That flame figure appears to extend thru the entire block and is strong and prominent on the back side - very nice - and perfect for a balanced design in a fairly large hollow form.
There is a narrow and shallow area of bark on one corner of the back side (bottom photo). All of that barky area would likely turn off in any bowl or hollow-vessel form. However, the heartwood area does include two pith areas (one for each limb of this crotch), each of which includes a very small pith-hole and a very tiny, pith-related radial crack. The larger of these pith areas extends from one side close to one corner (upper right corner, top photo), across the upper portion of the face, and exits at the other corner of the face. The entire path of this pith and pith-related features is very close to the edge (upper edge of the annotated face on the top photo)and should turn completely off as the block is rounded. Black Walnut 126
7-1/2" x 10-1/2" x 3-1/2"
11-1/2 lbs.
This is another gorgeous large blank of Texas-grown Eastern Black Walnut. Rectangular, it also comes from a major crotch and has a complex and beautiful grain pattern. In this case there are two separate bands of grain-crossing, flame figure, on opposite edges of the back side that extend into the heartwood and result in a symmetrical and very facinating pattern (bottom photo) - it looks distinctively like an animal face, perhaps a cat or hawk??.
The colors in this block are primarily the deep purplish-brown of Walnut heartwood, with a smaller portion of the bright white to cream of sapwood. While it would also be suitable for a beautiful bowl or hollow form (with some waste), I think it would be best for resawing for boxes, knife handles and the like.
The heartwood area does include the pith - one for each limb of this crotch - and each of which includes a very small pith-hole and a very tiny, pith-related radial crack. One area of pith, with it's small pith-hole and almost non-existent radial crack, is confined to one edge (right edge, bottom photo) and would certainly turn off if a bowl or hollow-form is planned. The second, larger of these pith areas extends from the left side, close to the edge (left edge, bottom photo), thru the block, and exits near the center of the annotated face (top photo). Since the path of this pith and pith-related features passes thru the center of the block,it will have some impact of the use of this block. I would plan on reinforcement of that small, tight crack with CA glue and filling of the small pith hole with something attractive (inlace, colored or metallic epoxy, etc). I see no other cracks or potential flaws.

Half-log and slab-type bowl blanks

This is another very nice, medium-size, trimmed half-log bowl blank of Black Walnut. It has also been rough-trimmed to round so that it is ready to mount on your lathe (no band saw work required).
Have a careful look at the grain pattern in the upper half of the cut face. It includes a curly pattern with strong character of reflective variation (called chatoyance - a changeable color or luster; the wood appears to shimmer when moved). I believe that this pattern will be beautiful in the side of the finished piece. The finished form will likely be a light, purplish-brown heartwood, flanked by bands of bright white to cream colored sapwood.
With full and tight bark on the back side, this blank may be suitable for a natural-edge or conventional bowl form (or a very nice hollow-form). However, that knot on the bark side is the expression of an old, now-gone side limb, and is accompanied by a large bark-included pocket within the sapwood and heartwood, and a small barky gap on the edge of the cut face. I cannot say for sure how deep that bark pocket may be, but it looks shallow to my eye. It will certainly have to be considered in your design and will likely result in a form that is somewhat smaller than the 10-inch maximum diameter of the blank.
This half of the log was cut essentially thru the pith, and a portion of that pith is present at or very close to the surface. I see no cracks (pith-related or otherwise) or other potential flaws in this piece.

That pith hole and crack are visible on the cut face (top two photos) and exits on the cross-cut, end-grain face at a depth of about 7/8" (left limb, 2nd photo from the top). You will have to address these features when turning - likely reinforcing that thin crack and, if necessary, filling any remaining portions of the crack and pith hole.
I see no other cracks, decay, borer holes or additional structural flaws.

Black Walnut 218
2-1/2" x 12" x 2"
2-1/2 lbs.
This Walnut blank is entirely strong purplish-brown heartwood. Those narrow dark brown stripes are spalt-stains related to nearby radial cracks that were outside the limits of this block. There are a number of small "birds eye" knots on the upper face (top photo) that extend completely thru the block and are visible on the opposite face (bottom photo).
I see no cracks or other potential flaws.

Black Walnut 222
3" x 12" x 2"
3 lbs.
This Walnut blank is entirely strong purplish-brown heartwood. I have no idea what those thin black stain lines are - they seem to originate at an irregualr knot(?) at the lower end (top photo). There are also a number of small burly, "birds eye" knots on the back side.
I see no cracks or other potential flaws.
