Texas Ebony Wood For Sale
I have begun cutting, hauling and selling Texas Ebony wood from deep south Texas. It is the first time that I have harvested and worked with this wood so I am still trying to learn more about it and to work out how well it turns. If you are more familiar with it than I, or just want to experiment along with me, I have listed a number of green turning blanks in various dimensions for sale below.
The wood is hard and very dense, and reportedly oily or waxy (although I haven't noticed that so far). References suggest that it machines and turns very well, and finishes to a high natural luster. Weighing approximately 63 pound per cubic foot, it is heavier than water (i.e. - it will not float in water). The wood that I presently have is fresh and green - it is not yet air or kiln-dried - so it is probably not yet suitable for turned boxes or any other form that involves precision-fitting parts.
The colors of Texas Ebony heartwood range from a dark chocolate brown (almost coal black) to a dark brown with thin stripes of lighter brown. This banded and somewhat swirling pattern of light brown streaks in the dark matrix resembles cream poured into coffee. When this very dark wood spalts, linear inter-grain areas turn to a light orange-brown, and (rarely) includes small closed, orange-brown circles (spots). The sapwood is a bright golden yellow color, an attractive contrast to the heartwood. As you can see in the example turned vase below, the bark of fresh Texas Ebony is tight and excellent for natural-edge turning.
Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.
I generally water-dampen the surface before taking photos, to suggest what each piece might look like once a finish is applied. Each block is then sealed on all cut surfaces to reduce drying and possible cracking of the wood during storage and shipment. That "waxy" surface you see in some photos (taken after sealing the blank) is just that - a wax emulsion - not an oily Ebony surface.
You can see examples of various bowls and vessels turned from these "exotic" Texas woods on our companion website, www.prairiesend.com.

Texas Ebony Pen Blanks
1"x 1"x 6""
I have recently cut and dried a number of Texas Ebony pen blanks. The wood is beautiful and can be finished to a beautiful, high luster.
These blanks include a mix of Ebony colors and patterns that ranges from the full dark Chocolate brown of the heartwood to a combination of dark brown heartwood and the bright golden yellow of sapwood, and some include the intergrain bands and the numerous "spots" of dark brown to orange areas of spalted heartwood. If you have a preference, please let me know when you place your order, otherwise you will get a "run-of-the-mill" mix.

This is another nice block of Texas Ebony. It is about 95% dark chocolate brown heartwood with 10% bright yellow sapwood in a thin layer on one face. The heartwood includes numerous thin, intra-grain laminations of "coffee-cream"-color. A small patch of bark is present atop the sapwood on one corner (top photo).
There are no visible checks or cracks. There is an irregular, 1/2" diameter open hole of unknown origin and depth on one end (lower photo, end-grain face on the right end). I see no structural flaws.

It was cut from very close to the pith of the small log and a single long, pith-related radial crack is present along one edge (top face, lower photo). That crack appears to be shallow and, located along the edge of the block, should turn-off as the block is rounded (Note - the price reflects that uncertainty). There is also a thin and tight crack in the sapwood (left end, near edge, top photo, but only faintly visible). I see no other cracks or structural flaws.

This is a small rough-turned bowl from some of the same Texas Ebony listed on this site. I included this so that you can see another example of how nice the dark brown Ebony heartwood and the bright golden yellow look together. Remember, this is not a "finished" bowl - the surface is still rough and the walls are very thick (to be thinned and finished after the bowl has dried).
For some of you "picky" turners - yes, the upper rim is not flat. I deliberately left it as an undulating surface that has potential for an interesting carved rim in the final bowl. And yes, that is an area of severe spalting on the far side of the rim - I plan on working that into the final shape.
Additional examples of Mesquite turnings are (or will be) presented on our companion website Prairie's End Woodshop.

Square blocks, Half-log and slab-type bowl blanks
These half log and slab-type blanks are suitable for deep or shallow bowls, depending on their thickness. The bark is generally tight and stays on well for natural-edge turnings. They are also good for shallow plates or small platters. If you are thrifty, they can also be resawn to produce economical smaller blanks for pens, bottle stoppers, pistol grips and the like.

Texas Ebony Lot 289
14" x 15" x 4 to 4-1/2"
36 lbs.
This is a very nice and very large slab-type piece of spalted Texas Ebony. The heartwood is a dark, chocolate brown with thin, intra-grain laminations of light-brown color and with a band of light red-brown spalting in the central portion of the annotated face (top photo). The spalting is quite sound. This piece was cut from just below a secondary limb so there may be some crotch figure in that area (upper left side, top photo).
The crotch-gap related to that secondary limb is present at one end and just overlaps the 14" diameter circle that I drew on the face. The crotch is shallow on the back side (bottom photo) so the size of a conventional bowl is not too limited. It looks like a full 13" bowl should be possible. Since full bark is present on the backside, it should also work for a full size, "barky" natural-edge bowl form.
There are several very thin and tight cracks within the spalted area of the cut face. These appear to be the extreme tail ends of radial pith-cracks and, in my judgment, are minor. They are visible at depths to ~1" at each end (not readily visible on the photos). I recommend reinforcing these with CA glue as you turn.
I see no other cracks or structural flaws in this piece. However, as is common in Texas Ebony, occasional beetle holes are present in the sapwood. I do not know for sure how deep they are but I have observed many in my Texas Ebony and they are almost always confined to the sapwood - not penetrating the heartwood.

Texas Ebony Lot 290

This is another nice large slab-type piece of spalted Texas Ebony. The heartwood is a dark, chocolate brown with thin, intra-grain laminations of light-brown color. The sapwood is the bright yellow. (top photo). This piece was also cut from the area of a secondary limb so there may be some crotch figure (if so, it is not obvious on the cut face - top photo). While this piece would produce a conventional bowl, that deep crotch depression on the bark side (bottom photo) will limit the depth and diameter. I drew two circles on the face - the larger one is what I would try for as a full size (13") "barky" natural-edge bowl form, with a gap on the side where the crotch depression is located. The second, smaller and offset circle is what I think would avoid the back-side depression and produce an 11" conventional bowl.
I see absolutely no cracks or other structural flaws in this blank. However, as is common in Texas Ebony, occasional beetle holes are present in the sapwood. In most of my Texas Ebony, these holes are confined to the sapwood - not penetrating the heartwood. But - in this case (again!) - there is one open beetle hole in the outer heartwood on one end (upper portion of the end-cut on the top photo, but not visible against the dark-colored heartwood). In this case, probing indicates that this hole is deep and will likely be exposed in either bowl form. So you will have to consider this in your final design..

Texas Ebony Lot 286
13" diameter x 2-3" depth
28 lbs.
This is a very nice half-log piece of Texas Ebony cut from a large crotch. It is big enough to turn a bowl approximately 13" in diameter and 2 to 3" deep. I messed-up with the chainsaw when halving the log to produce this piece (and lot #287 below). I used too small a chainsaw which resulted in a very rough surface; it is difficult to see all of that crotch grain below the "chopped-up surface!
The heartwood of this piece is the classic dark chocolate brown of Texas Ebony with thin, intra-grain laminations of light-brown color. The sapwood is bright yellow. I see no sign of spalt decay. There is a bit of a hole in the center of one limb (right side, top photo and left side on bottom photo). It doesn't appear to be spalt decay and the adjacent wood is sound. Also, final trimming of the blank will likely remove that portion.
Full bark is present on the backside, so this blank will also work for a large "barky" natural-edge bowl form. A NE bowl would be my choice due to the presence of a shallow depression on the barky back (middle photo) that would reduce the potential depth of a conventional bowl. A NE bowl would also be the best form to show-off that attractive crotch grain pattern in the bottom.
There is one thin and tight crack in the cut face (difficult to see but visible on the top photo). It appears to be the outer limits of a pith-related radial crack and extends from the lower cut end upward toward, and nearly to, the sapwood "V" of the crotch. It appears to be shallow and I would reinforce it with CA glue (and fill if necessary) before turning. I see no other cracks or structural flaws in this piece. However, as is common in Texas Ebony, occasional beetle holes are present in the sapwood. I do not know for sure how deep they are but I have observed many in my Texas Ebony and they are almost always confined to the sapwood - rarely penetrating the heartwood.

Texas Ebony Lot 287
14" diameter x ~5" depth
40 lbs.
This is another very nice half-log piece of Texas Ebony cut from a large crotch - the other half of the crotch that yielded lot #286 above. I messed-up with the chainsaw when halving the log to produce this piece (and lot #286 above) - I used too small a chainsaw which resulted in a very rough surface; it is difficult to see all of that crotch grain below the "chopped-up surface!
This blank is big enough to turn a bowl somewhere between 11 and 14" in diameter and up to 5" deep. My suggested range in potential bowl diameter is due to the presence of a large depression in the barky back of the blank - actually on one side (bottom photo). I originally drew the 14" diameter circle on the cut face before I realized that the depression was there. A full 14" conventional bowl form would encounter this depression and result in a hole in the side of the bowl! A bowl turned from this odd shaped blank would have to be smaller than 14", say 11 to 12", or some type of creative bowl form would be required to accommodate that depressed outside surface.
The heartwood of this piece is the classic dark chocolate brown of Texas Ebony with thin, intra-grain laminations of light-brown color. The sapwood is bright yellow. There are two small "spots" of heavy spalting, one of which may be a bit "punky". This may need to be reinforced with CA glue if the area is not removed as part of the waste within the bowl. Full bark is present on the backside, so this blank will also work for a large "barky" natural-edge bowl form.
The pith of the main limb is present in this half and a single thin and generally tight radial crack is present in the cut face (difficult to see but visible on the top photo). It extends from the lower cut end upward toward, and nearly to, the sapwood "V" of the crotch. I would reinforce it with CA glue (and fill if necessary) before turning.
