Texas Ebony Wood For Sale
I have begun cutting, hauling and selling Texas Ebony wood from deep south Texas. It is the first time that I have harvested and worked with this wood so I am still trying to learn more about it and to work out how well it turns. If you are more familiar with it than I, or just want to experiment along with me, I have listed a number of green turning blanks in various dimensions for sale below.
The wood is hard and very dense, and reportedly oily or waxy (although I haven't noticed that so far). References suggest that it machines and turns very well, and finishes to a high natural luster. Weighing approximately 63 pound per cubic foot, it is heavier than water (i.e. - it will not float in water). The wood that I presently have is fresh and green - it is not yet air or kiln-dried - so it is probably not yet suitable for turned boxes or any other form that involves precision-fitting parts.
The colors of Texas Ebony heartwood range from a dark chocolate brown (almost coal black) to a dark brown with thin stripes of lighter brown. This banded and somewhat swirling pattern of light brown streaks in the dark matrix resembles cream poured into coffee. When this very dark wood spalts, linear inter-grain areas turn to a light orange-brown, and (rarely) includes small closed, orange-brown circles (spots). The sapwood is a bright golden yellow color, an attractive contrast to the heartwood. As you can see in the example turned vase below, the bark of fresh Texas Ebony is tight and excellent for natural-edge turning.
Note : As elsewhere, the dimensions given below are Length x Width x Depth of the blank. Theoretically these numbers indicate the dimensions of the largest bowl, box/goblet or spindle that might be turned from that piece if no flaws are encountered. The approximate weight (in pounds) as well as obvious physical features (checks, etc) are also indicated. Note also that most of these are rough cut. I do not have the time or equipment to routinely surface the cut sides - although sometimes I think that the grain is interesting enough that I will take it to the jointer before I take the photo.
I generally water-dampen the surface before taking photos, to suggest what each piece might look like once a finish is applied. Each block is then sealed on all cut surfaces to reduce drying and possible cracking of the wood during storage and shipment. That "waxy" surface you see in some photos (taken after sealing the blank) is just that - a wax emulsion - not an oily Ebony surface.
You can see examples of various bowls and vessels turned from these "exotic" Texas woods on our companion website, www.prairiesend.com.

Texas Ebony Pen Blanks
1"x 1"x 6""
I have recently cut and dried a number of Texas Ebony pen blanks. The wood is beautiful and can be finished to a beautiful, high luster.
These blanks include a mix of Ebony colors and patterns that ranges from the full dark Chocolate brown of the heartwood to a combination of dark brown heartwood and the bright golden yellow of sapwood, and some include the intergrain bands and the numerous "spots" of dark brown to orange areas of spalted heartwood. If you have a preference, please let me know when you place your order, otherwise you will get a "run-of-the-mill" mix.

2-3/4 lbs.
This is a very long and attractive piece of ~2" square Texas Ebony. It is approximately 60% dark chocolate-brown heartwood and 40% yellow sapwood. The outer sapwood includes bands of light blue-gray shading (top photo)but there are two elongated streaks of yellow-brown wood ("included sapwood"?) within the heartwood (right side, bottom photo).
There is also a small section of wane (absent bark) on one edge of the sapwood and several depressions which are the shallow remains of open borer holes.
I see no cracks or other structural flaws, but there are several very thin and tight drying checks in the outer sapwood. These appear to be shallow.

Here is an interesting and challenging ~3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is about 50% chocolate-brown heartwood and ~50% golden-yellow sapwood. The heartwood includes the usual very nice pattern of wavey intra-grain laminations of the "coffee cream" color. However, a portion of that yellow sapwood lies within the heartwood area! That "inner" secton of apparent sapwood (included sapwood??) is a uniform light, yellow-brown, while the "outside" sapwood includes an interesting pattern of wavey light blue-grey color bands.
The outer portion of the sapwood area is a large wane - where the bark has been stripped away. Depending on your planned form, that wane may reduce the maximium turned diameter somewhat. The sapwood also contains numerous large and prominent beetle borer holes. Probing suggests that all of these holes are shallow and confined to the sapwood portion. A large portion of both crack zones will turn off as the block is roughed out, and I would simply reinforce and fill (CA glue, inlace, colored epoxy, etc)any that remain for "character". There is also a small knot on one side (barely visible, upper portion of the right side, top photo) that is trying to "pop-out". Another opportunity for colorful infilling.
I see no other cracks, bug holes or other significant flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 388
2-7/8"x 2-7/8"x 12"
4-3/4 lbs.
This is another very nice ~3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is essentially 100% chocolate-brown heartwood with a well-figured grain pattern and strong intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" bands. There is a thin portion of sapwood on one edge, but this will turn off immediately as the block is roughed to round.
This block was cut from very close to the pith of a small log and includes several radial cracks on one side (right side, top photo). Some of those cracks will turn off during rough-out, and any that remain could be reinforced and filled (CA glue, inlace, colored epoxy, etc) for "character".
I see no other cracks, bug holes or other significant flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 389
3"x 2-7/8"x 12"
5 lbs.
This is another very nice ~3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is approximately 90% chocolate-brown heartwood with a well-figured grain pattern and strong intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" bands. The 10% golden-yellow sapwood is restricted to two edges and most will turn off as the block is roughed to round.
This block was also cut from close to the pith of a small log and include one small and thin radial crack on one side (center of upper face, bottom photo). This appears to be very shallow - I would reinforce it (CA glue) before turning and, if anything remains - fill with inlace or colored epoxy. The sapwood of the annotated face (top photo) includes one very small and tight drying check close to one edge (right edge, top photo). This will turn off as the block is rounded.
I see no other significant flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 390
2-7/8"x 2-7/8"x 12"
4-3/4 lbs.
This is another challenging, but attractive ~3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is approximately 95% chocolate-brown heartwood with a beautiful, well-figured grain pattern and strong intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" bands. The little bit of sapwood is confined to one edge and most of that will turn off.
The challenge generally comes about from pith-related radial cracks. The pith of the small log from which this block was cut is present in one end (lower end, top photo). An irregular zone of small open radial cracks are associated with that pith and are present on one side (not visible on these photos). A large portion of the cracks will turn off as the block is roughed out, but some will remain if the full diameter of the block is to be used. As I have suggested elsewhere, I would simply reinforce and fill (CA glue, inlace, colored epoxy, etc)any that remain and emphasize them for "character".
I see no other cracks, bug holes or other significant flaws.

Texas Ebony Lot 391
2-7/8"x 2-7/8"x 12"

This is a nearly perfect ~3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is essentially all chocolate-brown heartwood with a well-figured grain pattern, strong intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" bands and some red spalt shading. The small amount of golden-yellow sapwood is restricted to two edges and to two odd patches of what appears to be "included" sapwood. That sapwood on the edges will turn off as the block is roughed to round.
I see no cracks or other significant flaws.

This is another challenging, but attractive ~3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is essentially 80% chocolate-brown heartwood with a beautiful, well-figured grain pattern and strong intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" bands. The golden-yellow sapwood appears to be more of the "included" variety rather than from the outer portion of the log.
The challenge generally comes about from the presence of pith-related radial cracks. The block was cut from very close to the pith of the log and an irregular zone of small open radial pith cracks are present. These cracks are visible on the upper face of the bottom photo and the left side and lower, end-grain face of the top photo. Some of the cracks will turn off as the block is roughed out, and I would simply reinforce and fill (CA glue, inlace, colored epoxy, etc)any that remain - for "character".

This is another very nice ~3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is essentially 100% chocolate-brown heartwood with a well-figured grain pattern and strong intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" bands. There are two thin strips of sapwood on adjacent edges that will turn off immediately as the block is roughed out, as well as several smaller areas of "included" sapwood.
This block was cut from very close to the pith of a small log and includes several radial cracks near the edge of one side (upper left side, bottom photo). Their location and orientation suggest that those cracks will turn off during rough-out. Any that might remain could be reinforced and filled (CA glue, inlace, colored epoxy, etc) for "character".
I see no other cracks, bug holes or other significant flaws.

This is a nearly perfect 3"-square end-grain block of Texas Ebony. It is approximately 85% chocolate-brown heartwood with a well-figured grain pattern and strong intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" color. The small amount of golden-yellow sapwood is restricted to two edges and to two odd patches of what appear to be "included" sapwood (upper face and the lower end, bottom photo). Most of that sapwood on the edges will turn off as the block is roughed to round.
I cut it too close to the pith on one end and a small, open pith-related radial crack is present (unfortunately not visible on the photos). It extends ~2" up from the lower end (reference the top photo) and may be as much a 1/2" deep based on the exposure at the end-grain face. I would reinforce with CA glue and fill as necessary.
I see no other cracks, borer holes or significant flaws.

This is another beautiful 3"-square end-grain section of Texas Ebony. It is ~80% chocolate-brown heartwood and ~20% yellow sapwood. That heartwood includes a moderately-strong pattern of "coffee cream" colored intra-grain laminations. The sapwood includes interesting patterns of multiple wavy light blue-gray color bands.
This piece is nearly perfect in that I see absolutely no cracks, bugholes or spalting - it is all beautiful Texas Ebony.

This is a small rough-turned bowl from some of the same Texas Ebony listed on this site. I included this so that you can see another example of how nice the dark brown Ebony heartwood and the bright golden yellow look together. Remember, this is not a "finished" bowl - the surface is still rough and the walls are very thick (to be thinned and finished after the bowl has dried).
For some of you "picky" turners - yes, the upper rim is not flat. I deliberately left it as an undulating surface that has potential for an interesting carved rim in the final bowl. And yes, that is an area of severe spalting on the far side of the rim - I plan on working that into the final shape.
Additional examples of Mesquite turnings are (or will be) presented on our companion website Prairie's End Woodshop.

Square blocks, Half-log and slab-type bowl blanks
These half log and slab-type blanks are suitable for deep or shallow bowls, depending on their thickness. The bark is generally tight and stays on well for natural-edge turnings. They are also good for shallow plates or small platters. If you are thrifty, they can also be resawn to produce economical smaller blanks for pens, bottle stoppers, pistol grips and the like.

Texas Ebony Lot 289
14" x 15" x 4 to 4-1/2"
36 lbs.
This is a very nice and very large slab-type piece of spalted Texas Ebony. The heartwood is a dark, chocolate brown with thin, intra-grain laminations of light-brown color and with a band of light red-brown spalting in the central portion of the annotated face (top photo). The spalting is quite sound. This piece was cut from just below a secondary limb so there may be some crotch figure in that area (upper left side, top photo).
The crotch-gap related to that secondary limb is present at one end and just overlaps the 14" diameter circle that I drew on the face. The crotch is shallow on the back side (bottom photo) so the size of a conventional bowl is not too limited. It looks like a full 13" bowl should be possible. Since full bark is present on the backside, it should also work for a full size, "barky" natural-edge bowl form.
There are several very thin and tight cracks within the spalted area of the cut face. These appear to be the extreme tail ends of radial pith-cracks and, in my judgment, are minor. They are visible at depths to ~1" at each end (not readily visible on the photos). I recommend reinforcing these with CA glue as you turn.
I see no other cracks or structural flaws in this piece. However, as is common in Texas Ebony, occasional beetle holes are present in the sapwood. I do not know for sure how deep they are but I have observed many in my Texas Ebony and they are almost always confined to the sapwood - not penetrating the heartwood.

8" x 8" x 2 to 2-1/2"
4-1/2 lbs.
This is a nice small slab-type piece of spalted Texas Ebony suitable for a shallow bowl or plate up to 7" in diameter. The heartwood is a dark, chocolate brown with thin, intra-grain laminations of "coffee cream" color. The sapwood is a light-brown to yellow with faint blue-gray shading.
Much of the bark on the backside is gone and the remainder is loose, so it would not be suitable for a "full bark" natural-edge piece. There also are occasional borer holes in the sapwood so if much sapwood is included in the finished piece, you will have to decide how to handle them (infilled, or left open for "character", etc).
I see no cracks or other structural flaws in this piece.

This is another very nice square-section block of Texas Ebony with sapwood on one edge.
